As eviction protections set to expire across the United States, up to 30 million tenants may be at risk of being thrown out of their homes, according to one expert.

“We reached a number of 19 to 23 million tenants in the U.S. at risk of eviction, which is terrifying in this moment,” said Zach Neumann, co-founder of the COVID-19 Eviction Project, a community legal initiative, told Yahoo Finance recently. “Now we’re approaching 30 million tenants in the United States who may be at risk of eviction and that’s largely based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s survey data.”

His comments come after nearly a third of American renters missed their July rent payments, according to a study by Apartment List, an apartment listing website.

This coronavirus pandemic is indeed 100 times worse than 1931 great depression. It’s getting real month after month with 157K deaths and almost 5 million infected here in the United States about 25% from global count 18.6 million.

Here in SoCal after months of being locked down, we drove around and saw empty spaces w/ closed down retail & restaurants Our streets filled with cars – younger generation families moving in back to their parents house. Homeless people camping around corners and vacant stores. Truly sad and scary. Those can be one of us soon if not later-

I wonder what this $175 billion $ Congress is proposing for renters/homeowners assistance could be used for?

Maria Sanchez,
When you said your second is forclosing on you, did you receive a notice of default? What state are you in? When was the last time you received communication from your second lender?
You said your husband is out of work, are you working or anyone within your household working?

1) Pls read article above from yahoo regarding millions of renters as commented by Moe. There is also another article below that providing advice to “homeowners who cannot pay their mortgage during coronavirus “ by a nonprofit CEO.

2). Mental toughness – you need to take a deep breath and let go of your fears. You are not alone.
But you still need to be proactive to give details.

Everyone’s experiencing financial hardships-You’re lucky, you’re here, to hopefully take advice at heart.

At this time, there is moratorium for foreclosures, so if anyone sent notice, you can file to Doj CFPB or ask help here-whose contributors’ knowledge & compassion are truly helpful to struggling ppl.

3) By the way, if thinking of hiring a lawyer, think & think AGAIN. My family was burned with almost 40 thousand; 3 years anxiety, exacerbated illness, up to now. Last lawyer claimed I still owed additional 6 Thousand ( w: we struggled to pay monthly) after paying $7 thousand legal work, we didn’t get. But it’s ok. We focus on positive. “Smile Back“.

You will need your money. Save whatever stimulus you’ll get. It’s harder to make mistakes. Thanks

More Trouble,
I’m sorry I can’t log on yet - still awaiting. I just can’t help commenting to let you know I admired you & contributors here Wanda, Annie, Isis Jeff & others who went fighting for years as pro se.

I think you did GREAT. Don’t you be disheartened. Relax, recharge and resurge later. Take some time with your family. You need some strategizing later.

Judged seem to have. made up their minds. It’s not about you. This “fight” esp now w/all MILLIONS of profit banks ALREADY projected in their books, THESE Judges, Congress & Senators are heavily invested—will do all to protect them.

It didn’t matter how great your arguments not how truthful your documents. They will use every relevant law to continue this “ kind” of treatment not only to pro se ppl but also ppl w/ lawyers.

Just continue to be mentally tough. We went pro se and had one day asking judge to “reconsider “. We got helped from paralegal, when funds ran out.

We did an “ ex parte”. We have not spoken yet, but Judge already set his mind. We tried to state facts. He listened and when I was done, I saw sadness in his eyes- saying “I admired your courage, but .....blah blah.”. I actually felt sorry for him being the judge and not be able to use his Power. Truly sad.

This is the truth. Judges seem to have been bought. A year ago, we spoke w/ non profit CEO, while in years of lawsuit- we just wanted closure.. We got warned about “this“ coming. My husband wanted this “fraud” revealed , so he gambled our retirement. Instead we got lawyers whose concerns are “fees” they can charge us. So gross.

You, however, are doing this pro se for years and still not getting foreclosed. You must be “Doing it right”. Keep your fight. Prepare for SC. Thanks.

Very sad, but SO typical. Being in construction and real estate for most of my life I have 'lawyer' stories that will make your head spin. Obviously not the correct thread for that topic but if someone else starts a new thread here, i'll contribute. People have come to this website looking for information, guidance and opinion, including yours truly, and can probably benefit from a 'buyer beware' type thread on sleezy lawyers.

I'm watching the inevitable collapse of housing. Right now, the apparent 3 month foreclosure moratoriums and stays of eviction have expired. It appears there has been a brief filing suspension thru August 15 2020. Frauds and work-arounds do appear to benefit certain investors who are now claiming their "legal reasons" for eviction are NOT BASED ON COVID. This is all so familiar.

WHERE DO PEOPLE GO AFTER EVICTION????

No credit. No housing.

I lived through one of the big epicentres of the last housing meltdown. I want to say this. People don't just get kicked out of their homes, and move into a cardboard box. In reality, people move in with neighbors, friends, family... or in a worst case scenario, their cars or shelters.

I've been living in NY since 2011, after leaving FL... and I can tell you the Media and the Politicians have certainly spinned the "homeless" and "hopeless" situation ridiculously. Those people you see out on the physical streets, walking around, panhandling, or sleeping outside -- choose to be there. In 99.99% of Cases, they are Drug or Alcohol Addicts, who refuse to go rehab, refuse to accept help, and are simply told by shelters that they are not allowed in with drugs. Many of them are in addition, estranged from family -- but the true reality is, they choose to live outside.

The politicians and their "soft on crime" attitude, refuse to address the situation, and allow these drug addicts to simply lay outside, have fun, and eventually overdose in a pile of their own filth. That is the "compassionate" and "progressive" way of handling these things. No forced self responsibility, or rehab, just benefits and fun -- all on the taxpayers dime.

I feel the need to mention this. Because I am tired of this. I am slightly behind in my own rent payments, and am behind in Mortgage Payments on multiple properties. If my management company decides to evict me, instead of working out a arrangement, they can choose to. And I will find a new place to live with friends, or I will leave NY. But that doesn't mean I'm about to be hopeless and out on the streets.

SO...OHM, in a nutshell, those who lose housing become dependents on others. This begs the question, how do these 'others' continue to provide for those with few resources? How far can friends helping friends stretch these existing resources?

We have now seen economic collapse based on bank fraud and economic collapse based on pandemic. Both approximately a decade apart. Each time this happens, fewer and fewer people are going to retain their resources and have the ability to provide assistance to family and friends.

Also, worth a mention that I have a tenant on my property. He has not stopped paying (restaurant industry but a manager who is not laid off). I would not kick him out if he encountered temporary lost income. He does knows he will not have water and would likely "pay something" to help maintain the property in a worst case scenario. I think it is important to help people facing unemployment or lost business earnings - and that this helps maintain a basic system of dependencies in our economy - in order to prevent collapse while we figure out the pandemic and learn to rebuild the lost "resources."

I hope this whole mess destroys our current "credit reporting" system too. It's all so flawed to begin with. People shouldn't be "scored" on whether or not they have had hardships. I chose my tenants on other attributes. I don't judge people on a credit score because I *know* that these "reports" are not always truthful!

OHM...you are right about that reality 'that people ...moved in with family and friends......shelters".

JM......you are right too about....."fewer ppl are going to retain their resources..........friends".

Take my 33 years here un US, where i started living with family for $300/mo including food. Then worked 3 jobs and saved up, rented, got married w/ 3 kids, sent to college, and all the works.

My two kids then & I experienced homelessness, when I got brain tumor, lost FT job and got divorced in 1995. SPNB (now BA) AUCTIONED my CA 2-houses on a lot investment in just 6 months. Done.

No modification nor any forbearance. Straight to foreclosure. >>>>>> First $100K trashed.

So, we moved in w/ family, paid $500/mo room until we got back up again, rented an apartment, saved up, no annual vacay- just pure essentials and savings for retirement.

Given our faith in US economy, being in RE industry, we joint ventured with family, put 30% down on two investment properties in ca- later did initial building work to construct 5 low priced townhouse- spent $200,000 just to get AUCTIONED, despite efforts of loan mod. . >>>>>Trashed $400,000

The same bank, holding investments modified 1st Lien, left 2nd pending to date. the rest is history. We complained- DOJ, CFPB, non- profit, ended up w/ lawyers. >>>>> $40,000 trashed + $2,000

we painstakingly pay $100 @ March to a lawyer, who filed "Appeal", retracted as we ran out of funds. No complaint made, given my new diagnosis of NASH. WE CAN"T BREATHE, but NOBODY knows.

To cut this short. It seems ppl who have been disadvantaged by life crisis always lose and no true help to EMPOWER to get back up. I'm proud of you & hope continue fight FOR OTHERS., who CAN'T.

The LESSON to this is WE NEED to care and help EMPOWER all HOMEOWNERS to SAVE their HOMES, this TIME, so we can all equally PARTAKE in the ABUNDANCE America allows us, and PREVENT ONLY the RICH Investors, WALL Street Millionaires to TAKE ALL PROFITS for themselves.

I believe this will SOLVE the BIG DISPARITY between the Millionaires and the poor (maybe us when we lost the fight and goes back to renting and start saving CYCLE.......> AND incentivize renters, of the true benefits of free economic market enjoyed by MAJORITY than few Millionaires. Thanks.

I think that in this situation even 175 billion will not be enough
I recently saw a video where some girl was walking down the most famous boulevard in Miami and every second store there was closed. This is scary how thing will turn out in couple of months

I'm all for civil disobedience and eating the rich but what you're recommending sounds like a felony.
